Gordon gained a scholarship to Eltham College and later trained to be a chemistry teacher. A gifted musician and composer, Gordon also conducted the orchestras in every school he taught at, as well as running a number of Christian music groups and choirs which often sang his own compositions.
A lay preacher for over 50 years, Gordon had no formal theological training and yet was a great Bible scholar who translated from Hebrew and Greek, at first just to deepen his own understanding of scripture and later for Wycliffe Bible Translators. He was remarkably gifted in communicating what mattered most to him - his faith and his music.
Gordon’s contribution to MissionAssist has been immense.
Gordon wrote the first ever EasyEnglish publication. It was a short commentary on Psalm 100. This A5 leaflet was used to test whether an EasyEnglish Bible with Commentaries was something that people would find useful. The reaction to that leaflet was so positive that it encouraged the EasyEnglish team to carry on with the rest of the Bible.
Gordon went on to translate all the Psalms as well as 1 & 2 Kings, Isaiah and Habakkuk into EasyEnglish. He also wrote commentaries on Leviticus, Ruth, Psalms, Isaiah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi.
Gordon’s commentaries are very popular. In 2019, they were viewed over 490,000 times by users on the EasyEnglish website. That’s well over a thousand “clicks” per day!
