Jonah runs away from God – Jonah 1:1-10

One day God spoke to a man called Jonah.
He said, “Go to a city called Nineveh.
Tell the people there that they are very bad.
God will punish them.”

But Jonah was afraid to do what God asked.
He ran away from God.
He went to a town by the sea called Joppa.
He got into a ship. The ship was going to
a place called Tarshish.
It was not near Nineveh.
Jonah paid the fare and sailed to Tarshish.
He was running away from God.

But God sent a big storm.
The ship Jonah was in nearly broke up.
The sailors in the ship were afraid.
They did not know and trust God.
Jonah was asleep.
The captain of the ship woke him up.
He said to Jonah,
“Wake up. Pray to your God.
Perhaps he can save us.”

The other sailors thought Jonah made the storm come.
They asked Jonah who he was.
They asked him where he came from.
Jonah said, “I am a Hebrew.
I worship the God of heaven
He is the God who made the sea and land.
I am running away from him.
He has sent this storm.”
