A mother asks Jesus for something – Matthew 20:17-28

Once more Jesus told his friends what was going to happen to him.
He said, “We are going to Jerusalem.
There I will be taken to the leaders. They want me to be killed.
I will be sent to court. I will be flogged and crucified.
On the third day, I will come back to life.”

The mother of 2 of Jesus’ friends asked him,
“May my sons James and John sit beside you in heaven,
one on your right side and the other on your left?”

“You don’t understand what you are asking me”, said Jesus.
“Can you suffer as I am going to suffer?” he asked them.
They said, “Yes, we can.”

“You will suffer one day but I can’t choose where you will sit.
My father God will decide that”, Jesus said.

When the other friends of Jesus heard,
they were angry with James and John.
Jesus told them all, “Whoever wants to be great must be like a servant,
just as I did not come to be served but to work for others.
I will give my life to save many people.”
