Joseph’s brothers sell him – Genesis 37:12-36

One day Jacob sent Joseph to his brothers.
They were looking after the sheep near Shechem.
Jacob asked Joseph to see if they were all right.
His brothers saw Joseph coming.
They were near a place called Dothan.
Some of the brothers wanted to kill Joseph.
But Reuben stopped them.
He said, “Let’s just put him in a hole and leave him.
We won’t hurt him.”
Reuben meant to go back later and take Joseph home.
The brothers took Joseph’s coloured coat off.
They put him in a hole.
They sat down to eat their dinner.

Some men came along the road.
They were going to Egypt to sell things.
Judah said, “Let’s sell Joseph to these men.
It would be bad to kill our brother.”
The brothers all agreed to do this.
So they sold Joseph for 20 pounds.
Joseph was taken to Egypt.

When Reuben went back Joseph was not in the hole.
He was afraid. He went to his brothers.
He said, “I can’t find Joseph. What shall we do?”

They killed a goat and dipped Joseph’s coat in the blood.
They took the coat back to Jacob.
Jacob saw the blood. He thought Joseph was dead.
He thought he’d been killed by a wild animal.
He was very sad.

In Egypt, Joseph was sold to a man called Potiphar.
Potiphar was a captain in the army.
