Jesus and the blind man – John 9:1-38
As Jesus walked along the road he saw a blind man.
The blind man was begging for money.
Jesus made some mud and rubbed on the man’s eyes.
“Go and wash in the pool”, Jesus told him.
The man went and washed his face.
When he came back he could see.
People said, “Is that the blind man who used to ask for money?”
The man said, “Yes, that is me.
A man called Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes.
Then he told me to wash my face.
As soon as I washed I could see.”
The people took the man who had been blind to the leaders.
It was their Sunday.
The man told the leaders the story of how he was made to see.
They said, “The person who did this cannot be from God.
He healed a man on our Sunday.”
The leaders sent for the man’s mother and father.
“Is this your son? Was he born blind?
How can he now see?” they asked.
The blind man’s parents replied
“We know he is our son.
We know that he has been blind since he was born.
We do not know how he is now able to see.
We do not know who made him see.”
They said, “Do not ask us these questions, ask him.
He is quite old enough to answer you.”
The leaders called back the man who had been born blind.
“Tell us the truth, we know that the man who cured you is a sinner”, they said.
The man said, “One thing I know, - I was blind and now I can see.”
The leaders were angry.
The man said, “We know that God does not listen to sinners;
he does listen to people who do what he wants them to do.
Since the beginning of the world
no-one has ever heard of anyone making a blind man see.
Unless this man came from God he would not be able to do such a thing.”
The leaders put the man who had been blind out of the church.
