Each tribe gets its part of the land
1-7 ‘The north edge of your country starts at the Great Sea. It goes from Hethlon through Lebo Hamath. From there, it goes to the city called Hazarenan. It ends where the lands of Damascus and Hamath meet. You must give each tribe a part of the land. Each part must go from the east edge to the Great Sea. From north to south, the tribes will be,
Each tribe will be next to the one to its north side.
8 The next part of the land will be different. It will be as wide as the parts of the land that I am giving to the tribes. It will measure twelve and a half (17½) kilometres from north to south. You must put the temple in the middle of it.
9 A special part twelve and a half (12½) kilometres by 10 kilometres will be holy to the Lord. 10 Here the priests will have their part. It will measure twelve and a half (12½) kilometres from east to west. And it will measure five (5) kilometres from north to south. You must build the Lord's temple in the middle of this part. 11 The priests who are the sons of Zadok will have this part. They were my faithful servants. They obeyed me when the other Levites and Israel's people did not obey me. 12 So the priests will have a special part, next to the Levite's part. And the priest's part is the most holy part. 13 The Levites will also have a special part, south of the priest's part. And it will measure the same. It will measure twelve and a half (12½) kilometres from east to west. And it will be five (5) kilometres from north to south. 14 The Lord's part of the land is the best of the land. You must not give or sell his land to anyone else. It is holy and it belongs to the Lord.
15 The people can use the rest of this special part. It measures twelve and a half (12½) kilometres by two and a half (2½) kilometres and it is not holy. You must build the city in the middle of it. 16 You will make it square. It must be 2,250 metres long on each side. 17 You must leave an open space one hundred and twenty-five (125) metres wide on each side of the city. 18 When you have built the city south of the holy place, the land on each side will be left. People who live in the city can use it to grow food and to feed their animals. 19 The farmers can be from any of Israel's tribes.
20 This middle of the Lord's part will be a square. It measures twelve and a half (12½) kilometres on each side. The city will be in this middle part. 21 The parts on either side of the square will be the king's land. They will go east to the edge of the country. They will go west to the Great Sea. And the holy part and the most holy place will be in the middle. 22 So the land that belongs to the Levites and the priests is in the king's land. It is in the middle of it. Judah's land is north of these lands. And Benjamin's land is south of it.
23-27 The other tribes will each have a part of the land south of this special part. From north to south they will be
Each tribe's part will be south of the next tribe's land.
28 The south edge of Gad's land goes south. It goes from Tamar to the waters of Meribah Kadesh. Then it goes along the edge of Egypt. It goes to the Great Sea.
29 This is how you must give the land to the tribes. You must give a part to each tribe,’ says the Lord God.
The city gates
30 ‘Each side of the city is 2,250 metres long. 31 You will give the gates the names of Israel's tribes. You will give the three gates in the north wall the names of Reuben, Judah and Levi. 32 You will give the three gates in the east wall the names of Joseph, Benjamin and Dan. 33 You will give the three gates in the south wall the names of Simeon, Issachar and Zebulun. 34 You will give the three gates in the west wall the names of Gad, Asher and Naphtali. 35 The walls all round the city will measure 9,000 metres. And then you will give the city the name, “The Lord is there.” ’
