These are questions on the biblical text of Matthew's *Gospel.
We hope that these questions will help you to understand the text. We also want to help you use the text in real life. These questions are not examination questions with right or wrong answers.
1:1-17 Take some pieces of paper. On each piece, write 3 names from the list. They should be the names of the grandfather, father and son in a family. The examples below show how you could write them.
· On the first piece, the names would start with Abraham. So you would write, ‘grandfather Abraham, father Isaac, son Jacob’.
· On the second piece, the names would start with Isaac. So you would write, ‘grandfather Isaac, father Jacob, son Judah’. Then you could continue in a similar way with other names.
· Then people in a team could pick up the pieces in turn. One person could pick up the first piece. That person could read it to the audience and he/she could show it to them. Then another person could pick up the second piece, and so on.
· Make short dramatic stories about some people in the list.
· Write the people’s names with spaces between them. Draw lines between their names to show the relationships between them.

Babylon ~ a country in the *Old Testament. Today it is part of Iraq.
baptise ~ to put a person under water or put water on a person to show that they want to follow Christ.
being ~ a person or animal that is alive.
bless ~ to say or do much good to a person; to call something *holy; to ask for good things to happen; to keep from bad things.
church ~ a group of Christians who meet together. A church is not just the building that they meet in. It can also mean all the Christians in the world.
disciples ~ those who follow another person in order to learn from him.
faith ~ belief in someone or something; things that people believe about Jesus.
Father ~ The Father is in unity with the *Son (Jesus) and the *Holy Spirit. The name Father emphasises God’s relationship with Jesus. It also emphasises God’s relationship with those that believe in Jesus.
holy ~ all good with nothing bad in it; separate from *sin.
Holy Spirit ~ one person of the three persons who are God. He comes to help Christians to become more like God. We cannot see him. He comes to give people the power to do what God wants.
Jew ~ a person who is from the family of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob; a person who believes the *faith of the Jews, called Judaism.
Jewish ~ a word that describes a *Jew or anything that is a *Jew’s.
kingdom ~ people or place that a king rules; or people that God rules.
Law ~ the rules that God gave to Moses for the *Jews.
Lord ~ master; a name that we call God or Jesus; we call God or Jesus Lord when we obey them.
messenger ~ a person who gives a message.
miracle ~ a wonderful work that God does by his power; a wonderful thing which shows that a person’s message is from God.
mount ~ a short word for mountain; small mountain.
Old Testament ~ the first part of the Bible, which the writers wrote before the life of Jesus.
olive ~ a tree with small fruits (or the fruits themselves) that people use to make oil. They burned the oil to give them light. They used it in other ways too.
Passover ~ the time when the *Jews remember that God freed them from Egypt.
pearl ~ a little white ball of hard material that shines. It is very valuable. A small, soft animal that lives inside a shell (a hard thing round it) makes pearls. This animal lives in the sea.
perfume ~ something that smells nice to put on the skin.
Pharisee ~ one of a group of *Jews who thought that they obeyed all God’s rules. They did not like the things that Jesus taught. They thought that they did not do any wrong things. So, they thought that they were very important and clever.
picture language ~ a description about well-known physical places or objects; it helps people to understand something else (often an idea that is not physical).
priest ~ a man whom God chose to do a special work for him. The *priests worked in the *Temple.
prophet ~ a person who told people what God wanted.
prostitute ~ a person who has sex with another person for money.
resurrection ~ when someone comes back to life again.
Roman ~ Rome was the capital city of the rulers at that time. That which belonged to Rome was Roman.
Sadducees ~ a group of *Jews who did not believe in heaven and *resurrection; an important group of Jews at the time of Jesus. They only used the five books at the beginning of the *Old Testament. They believed that people would not live again after death.
Satan ~ the chief evil *spirit.
scribes ~ writers, especially the *Jews who taught the *Law.
scriptures ~ the books in the *Old Testament or in the Bible.
sin ~ when we do not obey God's commands.
Son ~ Jesus is the only Son of God. Jesus has God as his *Father. And Jesus is God.
spirit ~ the part of us that lives when our body dies; a *being that is alive, even without a body; the part of a person that will always be alive, even after their body is dead. There are good spirits, like God’s Spirit and his *angels. And there are bad spirits, like *Satan and his *angels.
tax-collector ~ a man who collected taxes for the *Romans.
Temple ~ the special building in Jerusalem where the *Jews *worshipped God.
virgin ~ a woman who has never had sex with a man.
worship ~ show honour to God, usually with other people.
