God changed Jacob's name to Israel. See Genesis 35. Jacob's 12 sons were the ancestors of the nation of Israel. The land where they lived was also called Israel. After King Solomon died, the nation of Israel became two kingdoms. The nation in the north was called Israel. The nation in the south was called Judah.
