Chapter 5

5:1-2, 3-12, 13-16, 17-20, 21-26, 27-30, 31-32, 33-37, 38-42, 43-48; 6:1-4, 5-15, 16-18, 19-24, 25-34; 7:1-6, 7-11, 12, 13-14, 15-23, 24-27, 28-29 Look at what Jesus taught here. Then discuss it with some young people. Help them to use their own examples to make dramatic stories in similar picture language. Help them to act their stories for their friends and neighbours.

Make pictures to show some events from those verses.

5:1-2 Make a list of the actions. Who was there at the beginning? What might be the reason why Jesus went up the mountain?

5:3 How would you recognise these happy people? What might you need to do so that you would be like them? What do you think about that?

5:4 What might be difficult if you wanted to find these people? What will happen to these people?

5:5 How would you find these people? What is their reward? What will you do about all that?

5:6 Use your own words to say this. How will you benefit if you want to do right things? What do you think about that?

5:7 Who might benefit from what these people do? How would you show that you are a person like that?

5:8 Describe these people. How might they keep their thoughts pure? How will God bless them?

5:9 How would you find these people? Whom do you know that does this? What will you do in your family that would bring more peace? And how can you bring about peace in your neighbourhood?

5:10 Why are these people so happy? What might you be willing to suffer because you do the right thing? Where would you belong?

5:11 Express this in your own words. Why might you not want to be like those people? Why might you want to be like them? What will you do?

5:12 What do you learn? What will you expect? What do you think about all that?

5:13 How might you be like ‘salt’ in your neighbourhood? What would be different if the ‘salt’ had no taste any longer? Who is like ‘salt’ in your neighbourhood? How are these people different from other people?

5:14 What are ‘you’ like? What should happen because of that?

5:15 What do people do with a light in the house? What is the result? What would they not do? Why would that be?

5:16 What will you do? What will happen as a result? What do you think about that?

5:17 What did Jesus come to do? What did he not come to do? What do you think about that?

5:18 What facts do we learn? Even the smallest detail in the Law will not disappear. What difference might that make if you know that?

5:19 What do you learn about the Law? Why are all commands in the Law important? What will you do about these commands?

5:20 Who should you be better than? What might be the reason why that is necessary?

5:21 What did God tell people about murder? What will happen to murderers?

5:22 Make a list of the facts that we learn. What does Jesus teach here that is different from 5:21? What might be the reason why it is so bad to be angry with one’s brother?

5:23 What should you suppose here? What similar thing might you do today, as if you are ‘in the Temple’? Who is angry in this verse? Who has done something to cause that anger?

5:24 What should you do with your gift? Why should you do that? What might people in the Temple think if they see your gift there without you? What will you do because of what Jesus teaches here?

5:25 What should you suppose here? What should you do as quickly as possible? What will happen if you do not do that? What would happen to you? What will you do because you know this?

5:26 What do you learn about prison? What will you do about that?

5:27 What did Jesus say that his listeners had heard? What will you do because you know that?

5:28 What does Jesus say about wrong sex? What is the problem with thoughts? How must you control your thoughts?

5:29 Express this picture language in your own words. Would Jesus expect you to pull out your eye? What would you do to take Jesus’ advice?

5:30 What does this picture language mean? Why do you think that men and women should not have wrong sex? What might it mean to let ‘your whole body go into hell’?

5:31 What had Jesus’ listeners heard? What do you think about that? What must the man do?

5:32 Express this in your own words. What is the only reason for which a man may divorce his wife? What would happen if he did not do that? What would you think about that?

5:33 What things did Jesus say that they had heard? What must you do? About what must you be especially careful? Why do you think that this is true?

5:34 What must you not do? Why should you not use the word ‘heaven’ when you make a promise?

5:35 What other names of places should you not use in your promises? Why is that? What similar promises have you heard? What do you think about that?

5:36 Why should you not mention your head when you make a promise? What other parts of your body might that be true about? Why?

5:37 What must you do? Why? What is likely to be different if you do that? What will you do?

5:38 What had God said? What do you think that this means? How valuable is someone else’s eye or tooth? What do you think about that?

5:39 What must you not do? What must you do? What might happen when you do that?

5:40 Suppose that someone accuses you in court. Perhaps the person wants your clothing because of that. What must you do? What idea is Jesus teaching here? What will you do about that?

5:41 What might this mean? What is the idea? What will you do about that?

5:42 What is your responsibility when someone asks you for something? And what is your responsibility when someone wants you to lend something? What might be the reason why that is so?

5:43 What does Jesus say that the people have heard? What do you think about that?

5:44 What command did Jesus give? How can you do that? What will you do?

5:45 Whom will you be like if you love your enemies? How does God deal with good and bad people? How will you become like your Father in heaven?

5:46 Express this in your own words. Why might people be surprised when they heard Jesus teach that? What will you do because you know that?

5:47 What do normal people do? What do you need to do? Why is that so?

5:48 What is God’s standard for your behaviour? What do you think about that? What will you do about that?
