Numbers 26

Moses counts the people again

26:1The Book of Numbers began with a count of the people (Numbers chapters 1 to 4). This second count happened 40 years later.

1 When the bad things and illnesses stopped, the LORD said to Moses and Eleazar the son of Aaron, 2 ‘Count all the Israelites. Count in their clans all the men who are more than 20 years old. Count only those men who can join the army.’ 3 So Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke to the Israelites. They were on the flat ground in Moab at the River Jordan. Jericho was on the other side of the river. They said, 4 ‘Count all the men who are 20 years old or more. The LORD has told Moses that we must do that.’ So these are the names of the Israelites who came out of Egypt:

5 There was the tribe of Reuben, Israel's first-born son. Among Reuben's descendants were the descendants of Hanoch and of Pallu. 6 And there were the descendants of Hezron and of Carmi. 7 Those are the clans of the descendants of Reuben. There were 43 730 men in the tribe of Reuben.

8 The son of Pallu was Eliab. 9 The sons of Eliab were Nemuel, Dathan and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram were the men who did not obey Moses and Aaron. And they did not obey the LORD. Korah was their leader. 10 The ground opened. Korah, Dathan, Abiram and their families fell into the hole and they died. And fire killed 250 other men. So they became a warning to the other Israelites. 11 But Korah's sons did not die then.

12 There was the tribe of Simeon. Among Simeon's descendants were the descendants of Nemuel and of Jamin and of Jakin. 13 And there were the descendants of Zerah and of Shaul. 14 Those are the clans of the descendants of Simeon. There were 22 200 men in the tribe of Simeon.

15 There was the tribe of Gad. Among Gad's descendants were the descendants of Zephon and of Haggi and of Shuni. 16 And there were the descendants of Ozni and of Eri. 17 And there were the descendants of Arod and of Areli. 18 Those are the clans of the descendants of Gad. There were 40 500 men in the tribe of Gad.

19 The sons of Judah were Er and Onan. But Er and Onan died in Canaan. 20 These are the clans in the tribe of Judah. Among Judah's descendants were the descendants of Shelah and of Perez and of Zerah. 21 And there were the descendants of Hezron and of Hamul. 22 Those are the clans of the descendants of Judah. There were 76 500 men in the tribe of Judah.

23 There was the tribe of Issachar. Among Issachar's descendants were the descendants of Tola and of Puvah. 24 And there were the descendants of Jashub and of Shimron. 25 Those are the clans of the descendants of Issachar. There were 64 300 men in the tribe of Issachar.

26 There was the tribe of Zebulun. Among Zebulun's descendants were the descendants of Sered and of Elon and of Jahleel. 27 Those are the clans of the descendants of Zebulun. There were 60 500 men in the tribe of Zebulun.

28 The descendants of Joseph became two tribes. Those tribes were called Manasseh and Ephraim.

29 So there was the tribe of Manasseh. Among Manasseh's descendants were the descendants of Machir and of Gilead. 30 Among Gilead's descendants were the descendants of Iezer and of Helek. 31 There were also the descendants of Asriel and of Shechem. 32 And there were the descendants of Shemida and of Hepher. 33 Zelophehad the son of Hepher had no sons, but only daughters. And the names of Zelophehad's daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah. 34 Those are the clans of the descendants of Manasseh. There were 52 700 men in the tribe of Manasseh.

35 There was the tribe of Ephraim. Among Ephraim's descendants were the descendants of Shuthelah and of Becher and of Tahan. 36 And there were the descendants of Eran. 37 Those are the clans of the descendants of Ephraim. There were 32 500 men in the tribe of Ephraim. Those last two tribes came from the sons of Joseph.

38 There was the tribe of Benjamin. Among Benjamin's descendants were the descendants of Bela and of Ashbel and of Ahiram. 39 And there were the descendants of Shupham and of Hupham. 40 Among the descendants of Bela there were the descendants of Ard and of Naaman. 41 Those are the clans of the descendants of Benjamin. There were 45 600 men in the tribe of Benjamin.

42 There was the tribe of Dan. Among Dan's descendants were the descendants of Shuham. Those are the clans of the descendants of Dan. 43 There were 64 400 men among the descendants of Shuham.

44 There was the tribe of Asher. Among Asher's descendants were the descendants of Imnah and of Ishvi and of Beriah. 45 And among the descendants of Beriah there were the descendants of Heber and of Malkiel. 46 There was also a daughter of Asher who was called Serah. 47 Those are the clans of the descendants of Asher. There were 53 400 men in the tribe of Asher.

48 There was the tribe of Naphtali. Among Naphtali's descendants were the descendants of Jahzeel and of Guni. 49 And there were the descendants of Jezer and of Shillem. 50 Those are the clans of the descendants of Naphtali. There were 45 400 men in the tribe of Naphtali.

51 There were 601 730 men on the list of the Israelites. 52 The LORD said to Moses, 53 ‘I will give the land to the tribes. 54 The big tribes will have a big piece of land. The small tribes will have a small piece of land. 55 You must use lots to give land to each tribe. 56 The larger tribes must have more land than the smaller tribes.’

57 The list of the Levites included the clans of Gershon, Kohath and Merari. 58 And it included the clans of Libni, Hebron, Mahli, Mushi and Korah. Kohath was the father of Amram. 59 The name of Amram's wife was Jochebed. Amram and Jochebed were the parents of Moses, Aaron and Miriam. 60 Aaron was the father of Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. 61 Nadab and Abihu died. They gave wrong gifts to the LORD.

62 There were 23,000 male Levites who were more than one month old. But Moses did not give any land to them among the Israelites. So he did not put them on the list of the Israelites.

63 Those are the men that Moses and Eleazar the priest counted. They counted them on the flat ground in Moab by the Jordan. The place was near Jericho but it was on the other side of the River Jordan. 64 Moses did not count any of these men when he counted the people the first time. This happened in the Desert called Sinai. 65 That was because the LORD had said about them, ‘They will certainly die in the desert.’ Not one man among them was still alive, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.
